slam city jams is back with its second release, produced by young brussel based artist kassett. this multi-talented dude not only makes great music, but also does visual arts (look at that amazing fanzine coming with the record) and has his own label & artist collective called midlife. kassett aka gavin vanælst isn’t about genres, but about emotions when it comes to his music. however, asking him what he would call the sound he makes, his simple answer is: rave ambient. the all i feel 1 million ep‘ is a record full of diversity. it reaches from emotional and dreamy, arp-based ambient tracks with rave and trance references, to broken beats, weird synth solos, up to a rough but melodious techno tune. finally the cherry on top of this special ep, is a remix by lobster theremin regular imre kiss. he delivered a dark and dubby version of the a2, that sounds like it was recorded underwater.

following the first chapter of andy mac sdiving birdseries, idle hands welcomes italian producer piezo into the fold with an ep that harks back to the smoky, dubwise ambience of some of the label s earliest releases. luca mucci was a bristol resident for a few years before returning to his native milan, carving out an identity for his piezo alias with a slew of dubstep-focused eps on labels such as artikal music and subaltern. while on an idle hands skirmish stateside and playing on ny radio, one of the kelly twins dropped lume and remarked on how idle it sounded, sparking the process that led to this record. you can sense a link the early kowton records on ep opener opeq, all monochromatic textures and taut, slow-stalking rhythms, but here those facets are interspersed with a unique melodic elegance that offsets the moody immersion of the track, eventually blooming out into an effervescent slice of slow-motion house music. novemiluano meanwhile displays muccis capabilities in handling broken beats, exercising a devastating restraint without compromising on presence or energy in crafting a stunning piece of meditative soundsystem music. pushing that foundational dub principle of space and minimalism even further, lume closes the record out in stunning style with an intimate, glacial stepper that champions minute detail as much as looming gaps in the sound. with a peppering of micro sampling atop a deathly bassweight march, its a finely pointed arrow aimed right at the heart of idle hands, and we couldn t be happier to be releasing it.

pavement und preston school of industry gründungsmitglied scott kanneberg aka spiral stairs veröffentlicht ein neues album auf domino records! es sind nun acht jahre vergangen, seit scott kannberg, seines zeichens gründungsmitglied der legendären pavement, sein solo-album the real feel veröffentlichte. in der zwischenzeit ist vieles passiert. von einer gefeierten pavement reunion bis hin zum ausbau seines familienlebens in australien war alles dabei. jetzt meldet sich der gitarrist als spiral stairs mit einem neuen album zurück. “doris & the daggers” wird es heißen und zehn rock songs enthalten. am schlagzeug sitzt justin peroff (broken social scene), am bass hat sich matt harris eingefunden, der schon seit der gemeinsamen band preston school of industry mit kannberg musiziert. als gastsänger sind matt berninger (the national) und kevin drew (broken social scene) mit dabei. scott kannberg über sein zweites album: “i guess i’ve been writing songs for a while now. i like hearing echoes of things i love in the music that i make. writing music doesn’t come easy to me - it’s hard to write a song that’s good. but our memories slowly escape us as we get older, and in songs you kind of relive those moments, the things that matter.”

when tresor founder dimitri hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in east berlin on march 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of berlin s most influential and enduring techno clubs. “we didn’t know what would happen 10 months later,” he says. “we signed a lease for a year. which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months…”
as tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the us, germany, china, france, austria, italy and the uk, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification east berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.
